Testing for HIV & STIs
Getting a test for HIV and STIs in Wales could not be easier. The Welsh Government has a number of initiatives to provide free, discreet and confidential testing for anyone who wants it.
You can order a test posted to a place of your convenience, pick one up at centres all over Wales or visit a clinic. These are free, and the result will be sent to a laboratory and you will be notified of the result. These are known as self-sample tests and will cover all STIs including HIV.
If for some reason that does not work for you, you can buy HIV self tests from Terrence Higgins Trust or a number of other providers. These come in the form of a finger prick or oral swab and you will get a result within 15-20 minutes. If you get a reactive result call THT Direct on 0808 802 1221 and the team will organise a confirmatory result.
Order a self-sample test
Sexual Health Wales provides a free test kit for chlamydia and gonorrhoea plus HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. You can use these kits in your own home and then post it to the laboratory in the pre-paid envelope. Send the samples back to the laboratory, including the request form – as your samples cannot be tested without it.
Anyone in Wales can order up to four test kits in any 12-month period.
If you have any questions about the postal testing please contact [email protected]
Pick up a self-sample test
Test and postal kits can be collected from locations all over Wales.
They are ideal for those who prefer not to visit a healthcare setting to be tested, those who may not have the digital access to order self tests online, or individuals who do not have an address suitable for delivery.
Please keep checking back, because new locations are being added to our list of pick-up points regularly.
HIV self test
You can get a self test for HIV only – this is either a blood test or an oral swab that gives you the result in 15-20 minutes. They are cheap, accurate and discreet, allowing you to know your result quickly.
They can be purchased as a reduced cost price of £15 via Terrence Higgins Trust. There are a small number of free tests available as funding allows. If cost is a factor, and no tests are available, call contact THT Direct and they will arrange a test for you.
Visit a clinic
You can get free and confidential tests at one of Wales’ sexual health clinics. There are fully trained professionals keen to help with your sexual health needs.
You can visit any clinic and do not have to be symptomatic to attend the clinic and test for HIV/STIs.
While you are visiting the clinic you might also want to sign up for PrEP or get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B; Human Papillomavirus (HPV); and mpox.
