Recruit

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Terrence Higgins Trust – your support is much appreciated. If you require further information or need extra support to complete your expression of interest and/or application, please contact the Volunteer Cymru office.

We welcome volunteer applications from all.

Once you have submitted your Expression of Interest form we will contact you to discuss next steps and provide further information around the different opportunities.

Peer Support Role

Completing your application

Once you have met with the volunteer coordinator you will be sent a link to complete your application. The application will be role specific and will include the volunteer role description.

If you are interested in a lived experience peer support volunteering role, you will be introduced to our Online Peer Support Coordinator Cymru prior to completing your application to enable you to learn more about the role and the different opportunities available.

On completion of your application a volunteer record will be set up for you. This will include any training and development opportunities that you have undertaken during your placement with us.

References

The online application form will ask for two references. These can be employment or volunteering references – essentially your referees must have known you for at least 2 years and cannot be a family member. If you are not able to find two referees, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator Cymru who can assist you.

The Volunteer Coordinator Cymru will contact your referees, and once satisfactory references have been received you will receive confirmation that you can start your mandatory training modules.

DBS Check

Both volunteer roles require a DBS check. It is important to be aware that roles that require a DBS check can make the recruitment process a little longer.

Mandatory Training

Please note you will not be able to start your volunteering until all mandatory training (and role specific training) is completed.

The mandatory training module is online and is completed independently. All volunteers, regardless of role, will need to complete this module. If you require extra support or need to complete the training in a different format, the Volunteer Coordinator will work with you to complete the training. Other mandatory training modules may be required for your role, this will be discussed with you in advance.

Privacy Policy

Keeping your personal data safe is very important to us. We will outline how we do this after you have completed an expression of interest form.

Expenses

All volunteers will be able to claim reasonable travel and hospitality expenses (lunch/dinner) where applicable. If you have any specific challenges in relation to claiming expenses, support will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator. Expenses need to be agreed in advance with either the Volunteer Coordinator Cymru or your designated volunteer placement supervisor.

Claiming benefits and volunteering

You are allowed to volunteer while claiming state benefits, including means-tested benefits such as jobseeker’s allowance, incapacity benefit, income support and em-ployment and support allowance.
Benefits claimants are required to notify their job coach or benefits adviser of their in-tention to start volunteering.

Volunteers with non-EU/EEA passports

Volunteers with non-UK passports

Please ensure your immigration status allows you to volunteer. This is not something we are able to check for you.

If you have refugee status or exceptional leave to remain you will be able to volunteer.

If you are seeking asylum in the UK, you can still volunteer with us whilst your claim is being decided. You can also volunteer if you are appealing against a decision in which asylum has been refused. Unfortunately, if you lose an appeal and asylum is refused you will no longer be eligible to volunteer with us.

If you’re only in the UK for a short period, bear in mind that the application process can take time to complete. If you are hoping to volunteer but are not in the UK for long, please contact the Volunteer Cymru Office for further information.

We look forward to welcoming you to Terrence Higgins Trust and wish you every success with your application.
