The Welsh Government have today committed to further action on their goal to end new transmissions of HIV by 2030.
In the Programme for Government 2026-2030, First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has re-affirmed his governments commitment to ending new cases of HIV in Wales by 2030 and has set out the intention to publish new plans to achieve this ambition.
The commitment follows a Plaid Cymru pledge during the Senedd election in May to publish a new HIV Action Plan for Wales and to expand access to HIV testing and PrEP.
Richard Angell OBE, Chief Executive at Terrence Higgins Trust, said: ‘It is great when our leaders listen. Today’s commitment by the First Minister is extremely welcome and demonstrates that HIV is firmly on the agenda of this new Welsh Government.
‘During the election we called for bold action to end new cases of HIV by 2030 and to ensure that everyone living with HIV in Wales has the care and support they need to thrive. Our calls have been heard, and this Programme for Government marks an important first step towards realising our shared ambition.
‘A new HIV Action Plan will give us a renewed focus on the action needed to end HIV stigma, expand HIV testing and improve access to game-changing prevention tools like PrEP. We looks forward to working with Welsh Government, public health and our sector partners as this develops’.
